Talkback! Kubrickian: Sunday March 1st!
hello there!
it's been a second, but I have emerged to share news of a wonderful new show that I'm tangentially involved in.
the show is called Kubrickian, written by Zack Peercy, directed by AJ Schwartz, performing at The Factory Theater now through March 28th.
here's the official synopsis from the company;
"Trapped in a white space, three men who should be focused on escape or explanation can’t seem to stop talking about acclaimed film director Stanley Kubrick. This trippy existential show is a haunting and hilarious look at masculinity, creativity, and capitalism."
I'd personally describe it as surrealist theater in the mold of "Waiting for Godot" or "No Exit," but about contemporary film culture. it's less about Kubrick specifically and more about why we value the things we hold dear, and how we try to communicate with one another. if you love Kubrick, hate Kubrick, or have no opinion on the guy and his work, I think you'll have a blast grappling with this play, a rare example of a new work on such a small scale earnestly attempting something so bizarre and singular. I caught a preview performance last weekend and was delightfully engaged with its bizarre rhythms, absurd humor, and committed trio of performers.
I'll be leading a post-show discussion with the creative team after the Sunday March 1st 3pm show, so if you want to engage with the work even MORE, I'd love to see you there! you can get tickets to any performance by clicking HERE.
given my involvement with the show in this regard, I'm not formally reviewing the piece, but even outside of that context, I'm confident in telling you how much I love this play. I adore Peercy's script, knotty and strange and emotionally raw. I'm in awe of Schwartz's direction, paced perfectly and deceptively simple in how the space is used. it's also a very, very funny show, if that's something you need to know.
so I hope you can catch this play. I especially hope you can come to the post-show discussion performance. and as always, thanks for still being on this email list. more to come soon, I promise!
