THE MOVIES

The Tao of Nicolas Cage: 'Red Rock West'
  • RED ROCK WEST (1993, dir. John Dahl). watched on blu-ray.

    • wrote about this for Cine-File. i had watched this back in my listicle days, and was caught off guard back then by how delightful and reserved and stylistically assured of itself this movie was, especially for a movie I had literally never heard of before. something of a hidden gem in both the Nicolas Cage canon, and just ‘90’s thrillers in general, this neo-noir western is Cool and entertaining and just a great time. it’s at the Music Box this Thursday as part of the David Lynch retrospective, and I feel like it will really thrive in that context in particular. check it out either way!

    DAMNED OLD PEOPLE
  • DAMNED OLD PEOPLE (2025. Xavier Chavez). watched on screener.

    • wrote about this for Cine-File. yet another film for the Chicago Latino Film Festival that was advertised as one thing (in this case, a wacky piece of oddball comedy) and was unabashedly Something Else (in this case, a movie where A Cat Dies). a tonal nightmare all around, and yet, it made for another fun challenge to write about for the above piece. just like…..don’t kill a cat in your movie, y’all. fiction or otherwise. not for me!

slow week, but that’s where we’re at. anything you’ve enjoyed this week? enjoying the weather these days? what else? have a good one!
