Movies I Watched This Week (3/17/25 - 3/23/25)
calling a mulligan this week!
PRE-ROLL
- life is wild right now! the little one is starting daycare, my day job has hit a busy season, and [MAJOR LIFE UPDATE REDACTED], so my movie-watching and substack posting has sadly been at a low for the past week or so. I know for a fact i’ve got a few films to check out this week, so next week’s diary will be far more robust than the sole entry below (as wonderful as this week’s film is).
- most frustratingly, I was invited to go see a play here in Chicago and have been hitting writer’s block trying to get a review/reflection out on it for y’all. i’m hoping now that this is in writing, it’ll force me to churn it out in the next day or so. fingers crossed!
- Jan Schakowsky, the U.S. House Representative for Illinois’s Ninth District, has held this position unopposed for the past 25+ years. Schakowsky has had a pretty decent voting record, but the fact remains that she is currently 80 years old, and I struggle with how much of a gerontocracy we can continue to support in this country. this morning, though, journalist (and social media influencer?) Kat Abughazaleh announced her intentions to primary Schakowsky in the district. i’m all for a young, progressive voice trying to make a difference to trying and resuscitate our failing opposition party that’s currently flailing in the face of overt authoritarianism. and she’s running in the district I currently live in, ain’t that something! i’ll be very interested to see how this campaign goes, and might even stop by the launch party this weekend.
THE MOVIES

EEPHUS (2025, Carson Lund). watched on screener.
wrote about this one for Cine-File. if the year rolls along and EEPHUS remains in my Top 5 films of 2025, i’ll be one happy Ben Kaye. I adored spending time with these wistful folks, playing a game they love so much, trying to hang on to the dying light. it’s funny, it’s nostalgic, it’s cinema. check it out in a theater near you!
that’s it for this week! anything exciting happening with you? know any good recipes you’re willing to share? hot dogs, get your hot dogs here! until next time!
